Celebrating YouTube Live’s first birthday

To celebrate the first birthday of YouTube Live, we went through the normal birthday thought process: rent a bouncy castle or bring in the magicians. Neither of these seemed just right to celebrate the millions of you who’ve seen live videos, so we went with our favorite gifts: new features from our tireless engineers.

If you have YouTube Live, here’s what you’ll see:

Wirecast for YouTube Live: This new software is free for YouTube partners and allows you to produce and stream professional-looking live events directly to YouTube from your desktop. It allows capture and switching between multiple video and audio sources, roll in of media files and images and add live effects and overlays. If you’re enabled for livestreaming, you’ll see a link to download Wirecast for YouTube in your YouTube account.


New publishing flows and real time analytics: You now have a guided flow to set up and preview live events before you go live. You can also see real time access to data like playbacks and concurrent viewers of your live streams by geography and format.


Monetize live streams: You can now monetize your live events with advertising or paid options. A live event can be claimed in the new video manager like any other video and monetized with instream ads or paid options where you can set price by country. You can see more details on this in our Help Center on ads and paid livestreaming sections.

If you’re one of the many people who’ve asked for YouTube Live but don’t have access yet, we want to thank you very much for your patience. We’ve developed these features with the expectation many more of you will eventually use YouTube Live, and like we said last year, this process takes time to roll out broadly.

  1. When will ALL partners living in the USA get access to YouTube Live? I heard by the end of 2011, but unfortunately that goal has already failed. Thanks for continuing to improve the system. It just makes it better for those of us who will eventually be able to use this feature.

  5. Will this only be available for partners? Currently if I want to stream content I'm forced to a competitor's website. I'd rather keep my video presence together on YouTube, even if that means paying for the privilege.

  6. I agree with others: looks great, would love to be able to use it. Currently, I have to promote competitors when it comes to live streaming, which I have done for years. That all changes when I am allowed to use YouTube Live for all my live streaming needs.

  7. How can i sign up??!!! When can I start liveblogging??!! please! Oh and another helpful widget/thing would be to embed to Google calendar about when the live event will happen. If it starts in 4 days there should be a way to sync to the calendar for notifications! My idea..haha

  8. I think this should be available WORLDWIDE for partners, not just limited to the USA, it isn't fair.

  10. The Young Turks have been Live Streaming their daily show for a few weeks now, according to inside sources they've tripled their total Live Stream audience since utilizing YouTube to broadcast their stream.

  13. I think it's a matter of time until more YouTubers will be allowed to live stream content. YouTube is doing the right thing by selectively picking partners at the beginning, but there is a lot of creativity out there from individuals who currently use uStream and may bring their performances to the Google world.

    Maybe a tiered approach would work, like:
    - People who want to live stream today but don't qualify yet, they have to pay a nominal subscription fee
    - People selected by YouTube for the quality of their content, get the service for free

    Isn't that after all the AdWords philosophy? If your ad doesn't attract enough views, it'll cost you more to display it.

  14. Is there a way to apply for this program? I hit .5 million views today and am working on a video series where I build an electric guitar. I am only three or four hours into it, I do one hour at a time and all work is done in front of the camera as I explain what I am doing. I plan on spending exactly 24 hours constructing the guitar and filming myself do it. I would love to do it live. Additionally, I have all of the hardware necessary to easily encode a 1080p video in real-time. I am not sure if I should wait for the rollout of this feature before continuing work on the guitar.

  17. why doesn't the "allow" box show up when i go to upload a video. I can click on the play button but nothing plays. It doesn't even load. I went to the upload video page and all it does is show a black video screen and the "start uploading" button is like blurred out. how can i get the "allow", for my microphone, button to pop up?

  18. I've been streaming my live concerts all across the web for years and I'm excited to be able to HOPEFULLY stream live onto YouTube. I'm not sure if I am a partner, although I am already able to monetize most of my videos. If this does not include meas a "Partner", can someone advise on how to become a partner so I can roll out my Live Shows on YT? Thanks everyone! :-)

  19. A youtube channel owner and partner in the UK. I have made over 57 live hours on Ustream. I have over 1000 subscribers for my YouTube videos. I own wirecast. I'm in the UK and would welcome the opportunity to try YouTube Live. Please?! :)

  24. I do a bi-weekly podcast through my YouTube channel via Google+ On-Air Hangouts and my broadcast quality is limited to 480p. I'd really love it if I could Wirecast my podcast for both view counts and monetization options.
